system restarts while installing sound driver

I am trying to install realtek ac'97/ alc650 audio driver, after 90-95% completion system restarts and again ask to install sound driver as Multimedia control h/w found. this is keep on happening. plz help My system is P4, 512MB RAM win XP

Where did you download the drive from? Have you checked the computer manufacturer's site for audio device downloads?

u shud be sure about the sound chip on ur motherboard, loading realtek ac97 driver on sigmatel or soundmax chips can cause syatem restart, try locating the soung chip on the motherboard , bottom left corner, and download that model from net, or best way is to locate ur exact motherboard model on net and downloading sound driver
