Has anyone run/played system shock2 in WinXP.

The game is designed for Win95, 98/SE but a lot of these older games will run in XP. Example, Half-Life, etc.

If you have played it with WinXP let me know so that I won't have to Duel boot with 98/SE.

I recently beat system shock 2 using windows xp, too bad I had the freeware version and didn't get to see the ending movie 🙁

It ran perfectly fine and i didn't even need to use compatibility mode!! 😀
 
I'm a Win98SE user so I can't help with your question.

However, if you get SS2 working you might want to looking into a couple of mods. One provides several hi-res model/meshes for the game. (Really adds to the mood during play). The other is for hi-res textures. Apparently, the latter mod is just in the beginning stages but what has been done supposedly looks good. (I haven't seen this mod for myself yet).

Both mods are works in progress.

Neither offer new content, just a fresh look.

phsstpok, man that's cool. I loved this game and often thought some of these old time favorites could be resold with only graphic tweaks to bring up to curren standards. I use a 21" inch screen and those low res rates look crappy on it. Hurts my eyes. Super, a free download to tweak'em up. Thanks.

I can run even old games like Battlezone and it was designed for Win 95 as it says on the CD.
THe one problem I ran into was I could not stay connected to the game server.
It would seem that the DOS part of XP can no longer support the net codes for the game and the servers drop the XP computers.
If anyone has a fix for that let me know.

Don't know how SS2 game will look on a 21" monitor (mine is 19"). The max res is only 1024x768 and it's still 16-bit color.

SS2 is such a good game it doesn't really bother me that the visuals aren't up to today's games with one exception. The original models were laughable but with only 5 or 6 updated you can play the game today and enjoy it just as much as when it was new.

I think I read somewhere that Etienne Aubert got a professional gig so I'm not sure he will have time for any more models.

Hopefully the other project, the re-texturing, is continuing. I installed the beta (I guess pre-alpha actually) but I didn't notice the changes. Didn't spend much time on it and maybe I was in the wrong scene.

Yeah the 21" monitor does tend to water down the lower res games a bit. But I know what you mean about the game play- I played for the first time earlier this year. My first impression was yow this low res is gonna kill my eyes. But the game was so immersive I did'nt notice after the first few minutes. And that spooky computer voice-my seven yr son old who usually hangs at my elbow would crawl under the table! Man what a great game, sooo many hours of play.

Yeah, this must be one of the longest games I've played.

Also, there is a mod at www.fileplanet.com.

It's called shkpatch.exe

You can adjust monster respawning and weapon degradation, etc.

Sorry to revive a really old thread but . . .

You can raise the resolution as high as you want in SS2. I forget the details, but in the main .ini file, if you manually enter it, you can go at least up to 1600 x 1200.
 
Thanks, I'm glad to hear you can increase the resolution. Although, I've never mucked with the ini files on a agame, I'm happy to give it a go. Judging from recent pc game releases (e.g., DX:IW) I better get used to it though 😉

Editing .ini files is no big deal. Just use notepad to open it. If you want to, you can create a backup first. If I remember correctly, I played it at 1280 x 1024. I think at 1600 x 1200 some things were too small to read. I don't think I was able to change 'color depth' either. Let us know what happens!

BTW, what's DX:IW?
 
DX:IW is Deus Ex: Invisible War. It's the sequal to Deus Ex
