System Shopping Suggestions: What to Buy?

I'll soon be in the market for a new PC. I've built my last two myself, but since this time around I'm looking to replace every last component (you don't want to know just how outdated we're talking here), I figured I'd skip the frustration and just buy off the shelf, so to speak (in all likelihood, it'll be off the Web shopping page).

While I've read tons of articles on top end systems costing stratospheric prices, and I've seen plenty of bang for your buck articles for the build-it-yourself crowd, I've yet to come across a single article that ranks the best of the best by price range...precisely what I need.

I'm looking to spend about $1,000. I'd probably climb to $1,200 if that's where optimum value lies, but $1,000 is my comfort zone. Clearly, I don't expect the world for this meager sum, but I would expect a system that'll run the latest and greatest efficiently.

So, what am I looking for for my $1,000?

- AMD CPU
- Upgradeability
- 1 GB RAM
- Ability to play all the top games at 1024x768 with all, or nearly all, visual effects on, and maintain a pleasing framerate.

A 19" flat screen monitor would be nice, but isn't essential, as my current monitor is just fine. And I don't need any fancy peripherals (no flight stick or multifunction printer), nor do I have any special needs concerns, like video editing or multimedia connections.

I just need good old power and stability. Oh, and I'd prefer it not to sound like I'm standing behind a 747 at take-off.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I think that just about does it. That's a nice system and should run you right around 1200 bucks. I know that's over your budget but this will give you some good guidelines. Good luck

Wrong kid. That's what separates us Intel fanboys from AMD fanboys. We always praise the Intel product if it beats the AMD product. When the opposite happens we recommend AMD or we stay silent.
See, Intel fanboys are a lot more educated than they seem.
That being said i recommend you going Opteron 165 and OC it to at least 2,5 ghz. It won't even swet!

On a serious note though, it is very ridiculous. People can't even post good information here without being beaten down by a bunch of rabid pack rats.

If one chooses to use Intel, BFD. If one chooses to use AMD, BFD. They're processors people.

-Pentium D 805 (~US$136)
-2x1GB DDR 800 (any brand with 4-5-4-11 or less will do)
-Thermalright SI-120
-Pick either 7900GT or X1800XT

When I wrote my request, I'd no idea I'd be sparking what must be the foremost raging debate here on the forums, AMD vs. Intel. While I've read numerous times that AMD is now offering superior performance for the dollar, based on what "Wusy" posted, the soon-to-release Intel Conroe processor, about which I know nothing, will be compatible with speedier RAM. Of course, I'm certain I won't be able to afford a Conroe upon release, so this is an upgradeability issue, though not an inconsiderable one.

What's funny is that I had asked about complete systems, not components, as I really would like to avoid having to build my own this time around. But I think I only received one recommendation, and I thank the contributor for that. I looked up the rig, and it's clear that the way to achieve what I need with that particular model (which retails in base form for, like, $350) is to upgrade each and every part, customizing the system, which is fine.

Building my own this time around would also mean purchasing Windows XP, as I don't have a copy of the OS now. So that would have to be figured into any build-it-yourself price (where, as everyone knows, it comes installed on any pre-built system).

So, again, if anyone knows of a pre-built system that will handle my needs right out of the box for around $1,000, please let me know. I know the market is rife with retailers, from Dell to Alienware to far more obscure names, who put together complete gaming rigs. The question is who builds the best box for the dollar, though some level of reliable technical support is always welcome.

U could look at velocitymicro's gamer's edge 1000.

I just bought a customized gamer's edge 1500 from them, and i am very happy with the build quality and dollar value.(see specs in sig).

Well, in that case, I would opt for the HP d4100y series then. Its a good machine with Intel dual core and you should be able to pick one up for your budget. Just customize it with the D920 or 930 processor and a gig of RAM. Will make a good machine for your needs.
