System Summary?

Under Storage>Disks in the System Information it shows I have a 229,28GB
drive when I actually have a 250GB hard drive. It also says I have 3
partitions.
1) Partition Disk #0, Partition #0
Partition Size 47.03MB (49,319,424 bytes)
Partition Starting Offset 32,256 bytes
2) Partition Disk #0, Partition #1
Partition Size 229.28GB (246,182,630,400 bytes)
Partition Starting Offset 49,351,680 bytes
3) Partition Disk #0, Partition #2
Partition Size 3.50GB (3,758,952,960 bytes)
Partition Starting Offset 246,231,982,080 bytes
I am very confused. I don't see any partition drives except for the "C"
drive, and the partitions shown above don't add up to 250GB. Also under
Local Disk "C" Properties it shows Local Disk Capacity 229GB. If someone
could explain this to me I would really appreciate it.

First partition is Dell Diagnostics.

Third partition is an Image of the second partition that can be used to
restore to 'factory fresh', wiping out everything.

Middle partition is data.

229GB IS 250GB. Windows reports 'true gigabytes' versus drive manufacturers
reporting billions of bytes.

You need to learn the difference between 250 billion in base 10 (the way you
work) and base 2 (the way your computer works.)

The first partition is Dell Diagnostics, the last is your Dell recovery
partition. Both are intentionally hidden from view so users won't try to
mess with them.

Tom and Ted explained about the partitions; I'll just toss in my infamous
explanation of hard drive size confusions...


If Windows shows your hard drive as having less capacity than the size given
by the manufacturer for the drive, this is normal: you haven't been ripped
off.

The problem is that drive manufacturers don't count Kilobytes, Megabytes,
and Gigabytes the same way the rest of the computing world does:

In most of the computing world, a Kilobyte is 1,024 bytes (2**10), a
Megabyte is 1,048,576 bytes (2**20), and a Gigabyte is 1,073,741,824
(2**30).

But drive manufacturers use 1,000 bytes for a Kbyte, 1,000,000 bytes for a
Mbyte, and 1,000,000,000 for a Gbyte: so the drive sizes they give are
higher than the ones reported by the operating system and most utilities.

Also: the size given by the manufacturer is the unformatted size. The size
reported by the operating system is the space that's actually available
after the drive has been partitioned and formatted for use.

In other words: there's no missing or 'hidden' space on your hard drive.

This has been confusing people and triggering arguments for years...

Part of the confusion is due to mega-, giga- etc. having different meanings
depending on who you ask.

I'm not sure how good the take-up of this new scheme will be. Saying
mebibyte and gebibyte sounds a bit odd, but maybe we'll get used to it.
