System to handel CS5 + 0000's Photos

I am a professional photographer, most of my day is spent on CS5, as you all know, it's a
resource hog. Every machine PC or Mac that I have bought just don't have the horse power to drive it. You
spend most of the day waiting for things to happen.

So, I have decided to build a new PC that will handle the load.

First, I would like to install Win 7 - 64 on its own on a 60Gb SSD. I do not want anything else on this drive
except for the OS. I could be wrong, but I belive the system will run more efficient and be more stable, also in
the event I need to reinstall or upgrade the OS, I don't have to worry about my programs and files.

My config would be as follows, but I am open to suggestions and recommendations

CPU - Intel i7-2600k

Memory - I have been recommended 16Gb x 2 of Corsair CMX8GX3M2A2000C9 8GB kit (2x4GB) DDR3 2000MHz
Unbuffered CL 9 DIMM Memory

Motherboard - I have been recommended Gigabit - G1.SNIPER or G1.ASSASSIN

Video Card - I have been recommended the nVidia Quadro 600 1GB Dedicated Graphics Card

Monitor - I am currently using the Samsung SyncMaster P2770HD

Case - I have been recommended COOLER MASTER HAF X RC-942 RC-942-KKN1 or the Xigmatek Elysium Super

you will want 1.5v ram with a i7-2600K

those MB's are X-58 MB's not LGA 1155 (Z68, P67 etc for the i7-2600k)

Core System
I went with 2TB enterprise drives to save a little $. the WD RE4 family is made for raid and the is what you should be using. yeah you can put in cheaper drives, but I wouldn't. the Seagate Constellation series is an alternate and they do make a 3TB drive, but it is a lot more $. I went with Crucial M4 for the SSD drives, they are almost as fast as the Vertex 3's and have a better reliability reviews (less issues). I include the HAF X case, not the one I would choose, but its quite capable. Although I am a long time WD fan, I'd recommend this Samsung HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152245. Although it is only 2 TB it has a 70% positive feedback. HDDs over 1 TB have a terrible failure rate. If you scan the feedback on the best rated HDDs at Newegg you will see that the best have only 65% good feedback.

The downside to the Samsung 2 TB model is that it is a green drive, and sleeps. You can't really set it up in RAID. But the Samsung makes a great storage drive where you have an SSD for your boot disk.

Why are you using a redundant RAID? RAID 1, 5 and 10 are good for mission critical server setups, but unless you are setting up a server for remote access RAIDing is a waste of resources. Any redundant RAID, to be secure, needs a backup. If you have a RAIDed setup and it becomes infected with a virus, the vorus automatically spreads to the RAID backup. RAID setups insure against hardware failure, not against malware. You need to keep backups to insure redundancy and establish restore points.

If you are not setting up your own photo server for outside access, I would advise you to dump the RAID idea, and set up a periodic backup instead. That way if you have a mechanical or malware crash you will have a recent restore point to work from to rebuild your system.

Thanks guy's for your time and info.

My budget is between $3.5 - 4.5K.

The reason for the Raid is to setup a photo server that I can access from anywhere, as one part of my work is to provide location photo's to
film directors or agency creatives.

At present my photo library sits at 8tb and is backed up to tape. My biggest concern is hardware failure, I have had too many drives crash & burn.

Is there a way to isolate the raid so it does not get infected by viruses and malware ? or

Do I need to look at the entire configuration and start again ?

it has 6 bays for standard 3.5" SATA drives up to 2TB each. you can either use enterprise drives or just cheap consumer level "green" drives.

put 5 in Raid 5 and have a hot spare in case of a failure.

I just saw these and they seem to have good reviews and 2 Million hours MTBF, 5 year warranty
