I need some help on upgrading this computer.
http://techwiki.hardwarecanucks.com/product/1MDM1ODI/Gateway-FX6801-03/#spec

It's the Gateway FX6801-03
I purchased this computer about 4-5 years ago for about 999.99 which i think was a steal at the time.

I havent OC the cpu and I think the i7-920 is decent if i do decide to OC.
Any and all suggestions would be helpful from inexpensive upgrades to max. :)

Im trying to build a great gaming pc

heres more info and pin information on the ram this is from

where i got it from.

Would like to see what it would cost me if i spent $300 or $600 more is not impossible, and deals and bargains are always a bonus

Solution
your psu is kind of iffy if you have the money i would upgrade to a xfx or seasonic or corsair (ax,tx,hx) 550w-650w psu if you are going to upgrade other parts

if you keep your current psu the largest gpu u can get is this
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-video-card-r9270xdc2t2gd5

your current psu only has 6pin power connectors and has enough power to run this card

with a psu upgrade i wouldnt go above a 770/280x on your setup

for a case it is really a personal preference but the haf series from cooler master has really good airflow
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-case-rc922mkkn1gp

for the hdd just go with caviar blue from wd
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/western-digital-internal-hard-drive-wd10ezex
really all you need...
how much you looking to spend and do you want to upgrade for gaming? also need a little more specifics on the psu like how many pcie connections it has and what pins are they

you cpu can handle a nice gpu i would say a 770 but need to know if the psu has the connections to support it (pcie 6pin & 8pin)
what speed is your memory running at? if it is 1066 i would suggest going with 1600
i would upgrade to windows 7 at least unless you love vista that much

those would be my 3 suggestions but need a little more information for selections

you will have to take off the side panel of the computer case to see what the power supply is and for the mother board you can run this
http://www.piriform.com/speccy
it will tell you what model mobo is so we can look up the specs on it to see what ram it can handle. on the websites and searches i do it just says 750w and systemboard and that isnt sufficient enough to recommend parts

im looking for a good Harddrive that i can slip in as well. ;0

Edit: Also my case gets hot often and i need to keep the desktop cover open almost all the time....

your psu is kind of iffy if you have the money i would upgrade to a xfx or seasonic or corsair (ax,tx,hx) 550w-650w psu if you are going to upgrade other parts

if you keep your current psu the largest gpu u can get is this

for the hdd just go with caviar blue from wd
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/western-digital-internal-hard-drive-wd10ezex
really all you need to look for is 7200 rpm
also you could get a ssd a samsung evo is really nice and will greatly increase your system speed
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/samsung-internal-hard-drive-mz7te120bw

for memory i would go with this set of 1333 2x4gb g skills
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f310666cl9d8gbrl

just some ideas on what you could do with your system and if you want to overclock you will need a new motherboard oem boards are usually locked so you cant adjust the voltages or clocks.

so in conclusion if you want a quick gaming perfomance upgrade go with the 270x for 250
for the case its really up to you but haf's have excellent cooling for 100
and the 1tb hard drive would run you 60
so this would be 410
if you have an idea to spend close to 1000 dollars on upgrades just build a custom system and sell the one you have for around 400-500 dollars

Solution

Thank you for helping me out here.

I'd like to keep my current case, but id like to increase the airflow and lower the temp somehow. Maybe better cooling systems or such.

I don't mind buying a new PSU as long as it fits ok, its kinda tight in there already. Id also like to stick with a Nvidia card, not that radeon doesn't make amazing cards it's really just to stay of the same.

So going a better PSU and a more powerful GPU.

The ram is a must, but I can't do any better than a 1333? im guessing my Mobo's max is 16 gigs.

Will my GPU bottle with my CPU when i uprade since im not overclocking?

if i didn't decide to upgrade my PSU what is a nvidia card equivalent to asus radeon you recommended..

I plan completly building a new computer next year, but plan on giving this to my girlfriend so maxing it out at an affordable price seems like the ideal thing to do.

Thanks again you've been really helping me out here.

this is my suggestions for a cost effiecient upgrade while still keeping your current psu

your system will not bottle neck a 270x and 1333 ram is the fastest you can handle with your processor
really all you need for gaming and usually tasks is 8gbs of ram
the evo will help dissapate heat off your cpu
this ssd is reliable and will give you a great system speed with your os installed on it and use the 1tb for storage

for the heat issue there really isnt much you can do. it doesnt look like there is many vents or fan mounts on the case itself so maybe stacking some fans would help. and the evo should help get the heat off your cpu.

thanks for all your help and i plan on ordering most of that, but i would really like to stick with a Geforce card so what would you recomend thats very simular to a 270x

i have found a couple of 760 that have power adapters that would work with your psu
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127745&clickid=QKi21uz0Z20YSw6ycLUYdzVUUkTWaV0bTVAp3U0&iradid=97618&ircid=2106&irpid=79301&nm_mc=AFC-IR&cm_mmc=AFC-IR-_-na-_-na-_-na
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DHW4HP2/?tag=pcpapi-20

one has 2x gpin to 1 8 pin adapter
the other has 2x 4pin molex to 8 pin adapter and a 6pin to 8pin adapter

if you want a little less graphic horse power you can go with a 750 ti and they perform decently but you wont max games out on it, the 760 you should be able to max most games out

MSI it is, thanks so much :)

I got the gskill memory and wow bug improvement

I got a cool master jetflo fan and things are cool :)

I got the msi n760 hawk and bam!

Now I got the samsung 840 pro and I'm confused lol

Do I have the right sata cables for it? Not sure...
Gonna play with it some more but it's being a pain in my rear...

Should I install my OS on it or would it run just as fast to run say DayZ on it?
