Question System Upgrade

Hi guys I'm new here, I have a current system which is 7yr+ old
Intel core i5-3470
MSI h77 mobo
8gb ddr3 ram
120gb kingston ssd
560w Seasonic Gold Psu

my question is, is it worth it to upgrade unto a Ryzen 3 2200g system with a 16gb RAM?
or all I need is a GPU for my old system to play the recent games?
thanks

"Worth it" is subjective. The 2200G is a stronger CPU by most metrics, but a 3470 is still pretty viable. I wouldn't recommend running out and buying a 3470 in 2019/2020, but if you already have it, it should still net a solid experience.

A 3470 will still pair well enough with something like an RX570 or RX580, and allow you to play modern titles on reasonable settings.

The coast for a 2200g, motherboard, and ram, you could get a good GPU, that will greatly increase your gaming performance. As games have become more multithreaded, a drop in upgrade of a 3rd gen i7, or Xeon E3 1230v2, or better, might not be a horrible idea either. Depends on what exact model you have.

thanks guys, will my system hold up since it's a 7yr+ old plus? If I add a RX 570 or 1650 specifically my PSU, it will not explode or anything right?hehehe althought it is working just fine right now, my last GPU was like 6 years ago, a GTX 770 then I sold it, been using the onboard gpu ever since..

Well in terms of gaming performance the system will perform much better with your current setup + GTX 1650S then it would with the 2200G(iGPU). The 1650S (Super) performs close to the RX 580 and has a power power draw so there shouldn't be a issue using your current PSU. Then when it's needed, upgrade the CPU/MB/RAM.

Compared to your i5-3470 and if you had say an RX 570 or GTX 1650 Super, a Ryzen 2200g with DDR4 3000-3200Mhz ram would get you maybe another 10- 20fps depending on the game. You would be better off getting a Ryzen 5 2600 for $110-120 vs about $100-105 for a 2200g or save for a 3600 and get it for around $150 in about 5-6 months. If the games you play are not too CPU demanding, you could just throw a graphics card in and buy a new system later on when you need it.

thanks bro, but I have doubts about my PSU since it is a 7yr+ old, and I read that PSU has just a lifespan around that age and the capacitors will start to wear down under heavy load..

I believe there is some degradation on the caps over time but its not something I know well so maybe someone else can chime in on this.

If the PSU is out of warranty then get a new one, the Seasonic Focus Gold Plus 550W is a great unit and comes with a 10 year warranty.

Yeah so not really sure if I want to put a GTX 1650 Super to my old system, I was thinking of building a new rig instead.. how about this

Ryzen 3 2200g
gigabyte ga-a320m-s2h v2
16gb 8gbx2 T-force Vulcan Ram
240ssd
EVGA 450w bronze PSU
Gigabyte GTX 1650 Super

is that good enough?

What is your budget? If you can extend your budget some, you really want to avoid the a320 platform and get a B450 motherboard and a 550watt PSU with 2 PCIE cables. Again, it makes no sense to get the 4 core 4 thread 2200g with it only being around 12fps faster in most games than your 4 core 4 thread i5-3470. It's a side grade and it would make more sense to just buy a new power supply, graphics card and possibly 8GB more ram for your current system.

My last suggestion is to just save up for for a Ryzen 5 3600 and B550 motherboard to buy them in 6-8 months when the CPU has dropped in price. It will be worth it in the long run compared to a 2200g which you would likely need to replace in a year.

okay man, that makes more sense, thanks for that advice I really appreciate it.. I may just have to buy a PSU and a GTX 1650 Super, and clean my rig out, hasn't been clean for like 3 or 4 years lol because I got ashtma.. My Proc and Mobo are still good right? no worries about capacitors like the PSU?

Although your PSU is 7 years old, it's probably still good for another 2 years minimum since it's a gold rated Seasonic (good brand) and has higher quality components inside than most PSUs. I've been running a Corsair TX750 orange label I got back in 2009 in another system that I had running 24/7 for around 6 months mining cryptocoins with GPUs and it's still working fine. It's not on 24/7 anymore, but doesn't have any issues supplying power to an i7-2600k oc'ed I've been using for video encoding.

The GTX 1650 Super you are planning to get uses less power than the cards your PSU would have been powering 5-7 years ago so it's even less of a strain on it than say a GTX 970 from 2014 which uses 2x6pin PCIE and around 50-60% more power for the same performance compared to the GTX 1650 Super.

Edit - BTW, that TX750 I mentioned was not that great of a PSU, it was just a cheap replacement to a dead 600watt.

I wouldn't bother going from 4C to 4C with a little bit more performance per core as I doubt you'd see much of a difference. I'd grab a newer PSU (if actually needed), 1650S and then save up for something like the Ryzen 2600/B450 MB & 2x8gb @3200mhz DDR4.
