System won't power on after installing GTX 970 graphics card

I'm building my first system and have run into a problem when installing the graphics card, a GTX 970.

I've fully assembled the system without the graphics card plugged in and everything works great. I've installed Windows 10 and the computer is fully up and running with RAM, SSD, etc. all properly detected.

Then, when I install the gtx 970 and try to power the system on, nothing happens. None of the fans turn on, no beep codes, etc. If I leave the graphics card plugged into the motherboard but disconnect it from the psu the system boots fine again, albeit without video output (so it seems to be recognizing the card).

I've confirmed that the gtx 970 is firmly placed in the correct slot on the motherboard, and have tried both slots just to be sure it wasn't a slot problem. I've also confirmed that the gtx 970 is firmly connected to the psu via two 6-pin PCIe cords.

Any advice on what might be wrong or how to troubleshoot this? Here are photos of the graphics card, the psu, and the cables I'm using to connect the two, since that seems to be the source of trouble: http://share.pho.to/A6gnz.

Here are my system components for reference:
MSI Z97 PC Mate motherboard
Intel Core-i5 4690k CPU
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 2x8 GB RAM
Samsung 850EVO 500GB SSD
Rosewill 80 Plus Bronze 550W psu
GTX 970 graphics card
Corsair Carbide Series 200R Compact ATX case
Windows 10

Solution
Are you absolutely certain its the latest bios??
Cpu-z will tell you bios date , it should be 2016.

Stumped though mate, I'd expect a 970 to work out of the box on any z97 board.

Thanks for the advice! I checked my bios and its 4.11 (which corresponds to 4.B). I've also tried both slots for the gfx card, but that didn't work either.

Seems like I need to verify the graphics card and psu both work on their own, but I don't have another system to swap them with, so that may take a little while.

Any other advice on what to try in the meantime?
