Hello Tom's Hardware community,

First off, I apologize for reposting this. I'm having issues trying to update my previous post to show my updates and am still stuck without a solution.

I've recently purchased all brand new parts for building a custom PC. My knowledge in building up from scratch is extremely limited so I had a good friend of mine help out. After putting everything together, the system doesn't boot; not a single part powers up. (I've tried with two different power supplies now -- the wall outlet works; it's powering my main light.)

(Apologies in advanced for the unorganized cables -- I didn't want to zip-tie anything until the whole system is running properly.)

PARTS LIST
Motherboard: ASRock Z97 Extreme4 LGA 1150 (HDMI Sata 6Gb/s)
CPU: Intel Core i5-4960K Quad-Core 3.5GHz (LGA 1150)
GPU: ZOTAC GeForce GTX 970 4GB 256-Bit DDR5 (SLI and G-SYNC Support)
RAM: 8Gb DDR3 1866 (2x4Gb)
SSD: 120Gb SATA III
HHD: 2TB 64Mb Cache 6.0Gb/s
Power: Antec 850W
Case: Rosewill Challenger, Mid Tower (3 fans)
Optical Drive: Asus 24X DVD Burner
Network Card: Rosewill Dual-Band Wireless N900 Wi-Fi Adapter

All parts were purchased from Newegg.

This is where I had the most uncertainty. (The following pictures will explain more.)

Here is where those three connections get input on the motherboard:

And after connecting them. I'm not certain of the positive and negative sides but when troubleshooting, I tested as pictured and reversing where the white wire is on each.

Here is the manual for connecting the headers:

The last thing I wasn't quite certain of was with the GPU power supply connection. It's pictured closest to the camera in slot "+12V1" although it doesn't seem right to me that there are all those extra female inputs available even though I have nowhere else for the GPU connector to go and that's the only type that came with the PSU.

Please let me know if additional photos are needed.
Thanks!

I can't see any picture, but leave only motherboard, CPU and CPU fan installed, Connect the 24 pin power cable and the 8 pin one (it might be a 4+4 pin connector on your power supply)
Thee are also 6+2 PCIe connectors, but those are for the graphics card, not for CPU.
Start the board and see if the CPU fan does spin.

I'm determining that the motherboard is dead. I've ran several troubleshoots with two different PSU's as well as ensuring both PSU's work with another system.

Thank you for your help! I appreciate it!
