I'm planning on building a new Athlong 64 3800. Here is what I was planning on going with. Tell me what you think.

Lian Li PC-61
NEC 8X DVD+/- RW Drive
THermaltake Venus 12 CPU Cooler
Geil Unltra Series Dual Channel Kit 184-Pin 1GB PC-4400
Gigabyte GA-k8nsnxp-939 mobo
Antec 550W power supply "true 550"
AMD socket 939 Athlong 64 3800+
Creative Audigy 2 ZS Platinum
Powercolor ATI Radeon 9800XT 256MB graphics card

What HD do you suggest to go with? I was thinking of something in the 120GB range, but which one and why?

Any suggested changes would be greatly appreciated. System will mostly be used for gaming, modelling, and chemistry software. Thanks.

You don't say if you're planning to overclock at all.

If not overclocking, then you don't need memory any faster than PC3200 (4400 will work fine - but It's a bit of a waste of cash really  )

If you do want to overclock, then buy a 3500+ instead, or even lower if they've released them by the time you buy (there is at least a 3000+ in the pipeline for S939, which may end up being a great overclocking choice).

PowerColor are not a greatly loved Card manufacturer. Read the FAQ/Buyer's guide at the top of the gfx cards forum.

You could probably get an x800Pro or something for not much more than 9800XT prices nowadays anyway - that would be considerably faster for gaming at high res with AA/AF...

Aside from that, good stuff I would say. be a killer gaming rig for sure!

Agree with Chip death about the card.

Don't get a powercolor.

Get the newer line of cards (X800 or 6800) with 256MB of ram. If you're gearing up for Doom 3, look at the 6800 GT.

About a hard drive...
I can only say I have used 3 kinds. On my mac I have a sony ATA 100, very nice but old. On my new computer I have a Seagate ATA 133 and Hitachi SATA 150. Both are very nice and have received some nice reviews on NewEgg.com. The only thing, that I have learned, is that Windows has no drivers on their install CD for SATA so you have to do somethin with a floppy and drivers to install on an SATA....too much of a hastle for me. So theres my opinion...hope it helps

I never had problem with my SATA drive, if you do need some special driver they will be furnished with the HDD and all you gotta do is press F6 at the begining of the WIN2k/XP setup...

You can start by reading soem HD review there and see what fits you best. Ask b4 you buy ;-)

if money is not a problem id go with 2X Raptor 10k rpm(36.7gig) in raid0 and whatever hd for your storage purpose.

Altough if you read anantech review on RAID0, they say its useless I see a good difference in real world apps on my desktop when running in RAID0...

You could always get a raptor for your OS/APPS and another 80 gigs for your storage...that HD can be 5400 rpm too...

Anyhow it really depends on what your planning to do with your system and how much you wanna spend...
