I remember when Thief 2 came out, it was a little hard on many PC's
and slowed down a bit in huge open areas...

I am going to buy T3 but I want to know how hard it is on the average
PC...

I have...
XP3000+
Gigabyte 7N400 m/b
1 Gb PC3200 RAM
FX5700 std

Is there anyone who might be able to compare it to their system...???

I have been away from the internet and this PC for a few months now
and just learned the other day that T3 is available (I hope I heard
right) and I mean to get it as soon as possible...

Well, mine is a
Intel P4 3,0GHz HT,
800MHz FSB,
1 GIG Dual-Channel Ram,
ATI Radeon 9800 PRO
and I do have performance Issues (but haven't
investigated yet, because the game IS playabel of course). But it's not
running smoth on my PC. Well, I haven't tweaked down anything yet...

That is precisely my system specs also.

The biggest thing seems to be to turn off VSync. Try that and report
back.

VSync is off, same with Blur (can't recall the name of that gfx filter).
Multisample is set to 2, because with I get artifacts on some objects.
I had it on 4 but set it back to 2. Can't tell now how are my FSAA and
Aniso settings. Think it's 2 for FSAA and 6 or 8 for Aniso. Like I said,
I haven't played around much with the settings. BTW, I'm playing in
1024x768 and all sound options turned on (on an Audigy 2).

Blur = Bloom I presume. I have that on. Multisampling = 1, No FSAA or
AF. Playing at 1280x1024.

It's probably the AA and AF hitting your system.

I suggest you put both AA and FSAA on Application Controlled in the driver.

I'm running at 1024x768 with bloom off and MS=2 in the game, full details,
and it is very playable, with only some slight hitching. This is on a
2.3ghz athlonxp + 9700pro + Cat4.6

I'm just on the first mission, but I'm finding it very enjoyable and
atmospheric! Good stuff so far.

Did that, boosted performance. Much more playable now.

Well on my R9700pro system 1024x768 is very playable with everything on
high but with bloom/AA/FSAA turned off. With your videocard I'd say you
will be playing at 800x600, no higher.
