I'm almost certain that Apophis had it copyrighted, but I don't know
that he would enforce it against another hobbyist that wasn't in
direct competition with TacticalGamer.com

Names are not "copyrighted". They can be registered as business names or
registered trademarks etc.

Copyright only applies to creations like software, designs, composed
material etc.

There is also geography to consider. I could run a business in Australia
called TacticalGamer and someone else could use the same name somewhere else
and not cause a conflict.

If the guy is ripping someone elses idea, that's all ge's doing in this case
I suspect.

Right, I meant trademarked... And with the internationality of the
internet, web services of any sort are competing in the same arena.
Geographical borders apply less and less every day in this regard...

In this regard they remain the same because there are no international laws
regulating this, only a few treaties which affect a relatively small number
of countries.

For a trademark or patent to be effective in a given country it must be
registered in that country. Some companies spen tens of millions trying to
cover as many bases as possible.

It's true that this creates an issue for the net community because ther are
no borders.

An interest group like tactical gamers has no hope or securing that name
worlwide. Best (and cheapest) bet is to register all the domain names
available which are similar to the name.
