Hello,
I would like to know the meaning of the following idiom: Sb "takes a stab at something" for example: "Kate takes a stab at a cake at Q's". I think "Q's" is the name of a restaurant in San Francisco. Thanks a lot. Best

It sounds violent and the idiom probably has violent origins. I don't use it.

Ever gone spear fishing ? .... and tried to get dinner while dealing with the refractions of the water which make the fish appear to be where it isn't ?

Taking a stab at it is akin to making an attempt where you really don't have a lotta confidence in your success.
