I can wait but does anyone know how long it usually takes GPUs to arrive for laptops? Is it the same time as desktops? I'm not asking about max-Q but wondering if the regular versions will be available at nearly the same time. Thanks for your help.

Ah, the future speculation for people that like worrying about extra things LOL, don't worry about it, when it comes out it comes out, if you think it will be 1 week and it comes out in 4 months you will just be all upset waiting. If you have no expectation, it will be available when it's available and you will be just fine either way. Guessing how long it will be will not affect the actual timeline of the release past you saying "OK, it's may be out in 1 week. No it's not, OK, maybe another week. Still not out? How can they do that, I was told maybe January! The waiting is horrible!" Why go through that? Patience.

Right. But in the past did laptops get the GPU at the same time as desktops or not?

You can find the launch dates for the video chips on wikipedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_10_series#GeForce_10_(10xx)_series

Although the product release dates could be different from when they were baked into an item one could buy, only thing is to look for industry news releases when laptop makers announce models with new cards, and compare it to when the desktop version was out.
