Taking SSD from computer and putting it in new laptop

Hi,
I'm looking to buy a new laptop and I was wondering if I would be able to take the SSD out of my normal desktop (the ssd is a 128gb samsung 840 ssd) and put it in the new laptop? I'm trying to save as much as i can and if I dont have to spend another $100+ on another ssd that'd be awesome. Also will i be able to retain my OS and all the data or will I have to wipe it and make a clean install on the laptop?

You can take the SSD out from your desktop and install into your laptop.
It's best to format the SSD and to a clean install on the laptop, so none of the desktop configurations is mixed up
with the laptop. Do a backup first if you got important files.

It will need a wipe and clean install. Apart from that, everything should be easy.

A ssd in your laptop will absolutely transform the performance.
A great idea.
One thing to check is the height of the 2.5" ssd that your laptop uses.
The Samsung is 7mm high, and that is usual.
But some laptop drives are 9.5mm which may be a problem.


It is very unlikely that the chipset on your desktop and laptop are compatible enough to allow you to boot with a simple transplant.

You are looking at a clean install.
