GeForce 6800GT is almost as fast as GeForce 6800 Ultra, but costs less.

If you wait ~1 month, then you can get nForce4 based mobo. At this moment, nForce3 Ultra based mobos are the best.

From what I have seen on pricewatch, the GT is like 550-650 and the Ultra I didn't even bother to quote. He could SLI 2 6600GTs for 215 a peice and it should outperform the 6800GT pretty significantly for less money.

I would suggest wating a month and getting the nforce4, but if you HAVE to get it now, with a budget of 3 grand, here is what I would get:

AMD Athlon 64 90nm 3500+ - $315
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum - $131
2x DDR400 Crucial Ballistix 512MB - $300
PNY Geforce 6800 GT - $400
Thermaltake Dream Case - $120
WD Raptor 74 GB x 2 Raid 0 - $356
Some Sort of heatsync/fan - $30
2x Lite-On 8x Double Layer - $180
480w Antec True Power - $87.50

At this point the total is about $2,000 and you have a REALLY nice system. Since you wanna spend 3 grand on this, I decided to splurge on the rest of the computer:

Any Mouse and Keyboard, depends on your preference. I have the MX Duo by Logitech so... - $70
Klipsch Promedia Ultra 5.1 - $360
Sound Blaster Audology 2 (optional) - $90
some 19 inch monitor - $250

All this added up, and I might be missing something here I did this kinda fast, comes to be around $2,800. I can't really think of anything else to add to this, maybe use the $200 to buy games or something? I've never gone into building a computer with a $3,000 budget before; but then I usually reuse old parts. Anyway, I am sure there are more knowlegable people here that will suggest better stuff than me, so you should probably listen to them instead. Either way your gonna have a great system.
