Talk to me about your "yard guy"

I have off and on the past few years hired a lawn service to do our grass, particularly in the hot months. This year I have come to find that weed eating is completely off my list of abilities moving forward. It simply hurts too much in spite of having a model that is long to accommodate my height. I have become much more heat intolerant this year so I opted to hire a guy that we have known since he was about 5yo or so. Been good friends of friends of the family, we have eaten and drank together, played some paintball and such with the mutual friends....anywho...

We have a very large spanish speaking population here that for the most part has taken over the lawn maint. scene. There is a fellow that has been doing quite a few yards in the hood here for years. We hired him to start with, but there was a language barrier. I had a very hard time getting across what I specifically wanted in relation to grass height and an area that I prefer not be cut on a regular basis. The guy ended up actually damaging my grass for cutting it too low and I had to spend a considerable amount of time and money fixing what was done. We used a couple of other services which varied in cost, typically pretty high, and service which was typically pretty good. The last place actually fired me for the rocks that grow in our yard.

Our 'new' guy/friend does a decent job on the grass. He edges when it needs it (with the weedeater) and such. He is actively cutting about 4/5 of the yard every other week and charging $75. We have just at an acre of grass. He doesn't do beds unless you add those services on in the summertime, but pivots his service to bushes and beds when the grass doesn't need cut.

What is the "landscape" (pah dum) of paid yard work in your locale?

In SoCal, I pay $80 plus tip each time I have it cut. About a third acre, but it needs little cutting during heat of summer. One of my neighbors has a landscaping co., so he and his son do us after they finish for the day.

Interesting in that here all of the yard guys will basically be owed for the scheduled cuts whether it needs it or not. This was a good part of what led to the damage the first guy did.

Maybe because he is my neighbor, maybe because there are as many landscaping companies here as there are bars in my hometown (lots and lots). But my wife keeps track and tells him when we need a cut, we have no schedule.

My buddy down in Tampa had a guy approach him the day he moved into the new neighborhood. The core group of folks all moved in within the same year. This guy knew someone in the HOA and got most of the yards in the neighborhood, at least while the first owners lived there. In many cases they have changed to renters, but the original owners keep this guy. He is astoundingly good and charges $40 a yard, no price increase at over a decade now.
