Has anyone here ever run cable from a first floor to second floor so they can plug their PC directly into their modem via Ethernet? I’ve been spoiled by Gig speed, and in our new house, it would not make sense for my office to be where the cable outputs are.

Any other creative ideas? Thought of maybe getting a cheap laptop that sits plugged into the modem and I could just use that when I need to download large files…

Solution
The drilling holes and running the wire tends to be the easy part of the project.

The largest issue is making a minimum number of holes in the drywall so you can get your drill in. It is more how much effort does it take to fix the holes in the drywall and paint to match. Best to run in say a closet where slightly mismatched paint won't show as much.

Someone who does this professionally can minimize the damage. Unfortunately there are cases where there is no option but to cut holes in say your ceiling, like when the upper and lower floor walls do no align.

Since it sounds like you have a cable modem I would recommend you try MoCA as your first option if you also have coax in the other room. The newer moca units can...

Solution
Alternates are powerline or MOCA connections.

Powerline pumps the signal through the house wiring.
MOCA does it through any existing coax wiring.

I bought a MoCA but I think I misunderstood what it would do. My issue is that my work PC is in a room that does NOT have a COAX outlet. So, the MoCA device doesn't really work. If I did have a COAX outlet in my office, I would just put the modem there.

Well, if you don't have a coax port in that room, MOCA is of no use.

It is a substitute for an ethernet Cat5e cable.
Your other option would be powerline devices. Pumps the signal through the house wiring.

In descending order, these are your only choices.
Ethernet
MOCA
powerline
WiFI

Much appreciated man! Im using a Mesh setup and only getting around 100mbps and I have 1G speeds wired. Going to return the MOCA setup for a Powerline and then call it quits for now.
