The TBC-100 is a PCI card; the TBC-1000 is a standalone unit. As I understand
it, they differ significantly in price but are essentially the same units.
Anyone have any background on either/both of these units? Recomendations?

Thanks -

Brain,
As you said, they are the same device except the PCI card needs an empty
slot in your computer which it uses for power, that's it. It has no other
connection to the computer at all but for power.
It is not detected by the computer nor can it communicate with the computer
through any software at all.

I had it originally and exchanged it for the external unit which comes in
it's own case and a separate wall wort (power supply). This way, you don't
have to power on the whole computer to just use this device if you are
working with other external sources and recorders. It's worth the few extra
bucks, In my opinion and won't pick up stray interference from inside the
computer and use a slot.

Hope this helps,

The TBC - 1000 also has a 4 way dist amp built in, which isn't the
case with the TBC-100. Also the 1000 will take an audio feed, whether
this is purely for the benefit of the Distribution amp or whether it
will maintain tighter video/audio synch by adding a compensatory
delay to the audio throughput to match any incurred by processing to
the video I'm not sure. Assuming reasonable performance from both
units, and as we've moved into an age where tape is increasingly
likely to be used as a legacy sourcing media, then the distribution
amp element may be a little redundant for many users, although for
patching or swap over convenience a stand alone unit may be more
desirable than a pci card so it might be worth checking out the
LEKTCB100 - which is basically the TBC-100 in a box but with some
control elements available (TBC-100 has none) - for the same price ---
Or might be worth looking at the LEKTCB100GEN which is a genlockable
version and costs a few quid more.

Hope thats useful

In North America the LekTCB100
is called AVT-8710. It seems to
have various names in many
countries. Very reasonable
US$190-250. I've found it to work well.

Also, it is not the same
manufacturer as for the
TBC-100/1000
I've tried the 1000, and the
picture was a bit soft
(probably means some roll-off
in the high frequencies -- this was
when the model first came out a few
years ago. Maybe it's better now).

Good luck,
George
