Gentlemen and ladies,

First off, I notice in reading through the newsgroup that responses are both
top posted and bottom posted so I don't guess that is such a big deal here.
Some newsgroups get a bit pickey with that.

Have switched from a Hewlett Packard to a Dell Dimension 8300 and from Win
98 to XP Home Edition. In transfering programs to XP I have hit a couple of
snags.

Have installed Earthlink 2004 software from a download and now get an error
message when I try to connect. Will skip the message body, it says I don't
have certain components to connect: Remote Network Access, Network
interface card or Dial-up Adapter, TCP/IP protocol.

Went to Connect To off main menu, properties of the listed connections and
TCP/IP protocols are checked under the Networking tab.

Have downloaded an 11 page document on troubleshooting TCP/IP connectivity
for Win XP from MS but have not read it yet.

Do I need to call Dell tech support or Earthlink tech support ?

Any suggestions from you ?

I kept the old HP hooked up just in case I needed something.

Thanks for the assist.

Des, the Curmudgeon.

Firstly, are you using the Earthlink dialup service or one of their
broadband products?

Secondly, it's likely that Windows can create that connection by itself w/o
installation of ISP software - but I'm getting ahead of myself.

What service do you have?

I'm out here in the sticks of Oklahoma, dial-up is the service I have to
use.

I have the Win XP install disks and all the other disks that came with the
Dimension. The settings I need are not on the Earthlink 2003 cd and my
requested cd of their 2004 software hasn't arrived yet. I seem to remember
having done this process way back there with a Win 95 machine but can't
remember the details.

Thanks for the assist.

There's nothing in the Earthlink software that you should need to connect
(so far as I know) unless they use an altered browser for their purposes.

You'll need your user name, password, mail and news server names, and the
Earthlink phone number to simply create the new connection in Windows.

Start/settings/network connections/create a new connection and follow the
prompts for connecting with a modem.

Verify that your modem (to surge, if applicable) to wall connection is good
before you start.

Check out http://support.earthlink.net/ If you can't get hooked up using
the info linked to this page, you have trouble big time. Good luck.

this is true. earthlink tech support should be able to talk you through
connecting with he windows dialer... but the earthlink dialer provides easy
lookup and changing of local access number, and their other software
provides a pop-up blocker and a accelerator that helps provides faster
connection on the same line. here are the earthlink instructions on how to
connect without their 'total access' software... you will of course also
have to manually set up outlook, or you could just use their web mail for
your email access until the total access software arrives to configure that
for you.

Thanks for everyone's help. I finally got the 2004 Earthlink software
loaded and got connected and everything works fine. I used System Restore
to take the OS back to the day I first plugged it in. Before doing so I
deleted anything and everything that had to do with Earthlink, did the
Restore and loaded the 2004 software and it connected without a hitch.
