TDK 16/10/40?

I was considering buying TDK's newest drive(16/10/40 veloCD ReWriter), does anyone have any personal qualms about this drive due to personal experience or do you think that i would be better off with a plextor drive. My biggest concern is the amount of time it takes for the cds to burn and the ratio of succesfully burned cds to burn failures such as underrun etc...

i havent had problems. the downside i dont like is that it doesnt support reading of subchannel data. but if you download your iso's off the net i guess it doesnt matter.

I've also had this drive for about 2-3 weeks and so far think it's great. I have burned maybe 30 CDs or so with no coasters. TDK doesn't actually make their own drives, they just rebadge drives from other manufacturers. There are 2 versions of the TDK 16/10/40....One is made by Sanyo and one by Plextor. The first ones were the Sanyo and most of the ones floating around now are the Plextor. You can tell before you buy it by looking at the bottom of the box. If it has a "Made in Japan" sticker on it and a TLA#0000 sticker, then it is the Plextor version. The Sanyo drive can only read subchannel data if you upgrade the firmare. But the Plextor version will read it just fine.

My drive is the Plextor version and it works great. You might want to consider an actual Plextor drive though since you may get better support. Only advantage of the TDK is maybe price, looks(if you like the look), and the fact it comes with Nero and not Easy CD Creator like the Plextor is bundled with.

i thought that it couldnt read subchannel data. we are talking about the cyclone tdk here right? i had the latest tdk firmware update to the cyclone but it doesnt include anything to do with subchannel data. i tried with a couple of programs, but my tdk definetely doesnt support it.

what firware update are you talking about?

Can't be a plexstor -- they read subchannel data -- unless they screw around with the bios as not to sell as good drive via competition. If it can't do it all I wouldn't want it -- personal preference I guess.

The drive I have is the american Velocd, not the cyclone. The firmware update is for the first version of the Velocd 16/10/40x, which is a rebadged Sanyo. It updates the firmware to 5.31 and provides DAO/RAW support. As it says on the page, this firmare is only for the drive that is labeled 16/10/40X and not 16/10/40.

Mine is 16/10/40 and came with firmware 1.00, which is the same version the plextor 16/10/40a comes with. And the drive looks the same as the Plextor drive front and back, including the small fan on the back of he drive like the plextor.

I don't remember where I saw it but some site compared the drives and has pictures showing the TDK and Plextor and pictures of almost identical benchmarks from both. Search google.com and check it out.

Just FYI, the TDK 16x burners at Costco in my nieghborhood are of the Plextor type as described below by another poster. They are priced at $228. They also have the Yamaha at about $190, as I recall. And the Cendyne (sp?), for about $100. Good Luck, I haven't decided yet, either.
