I have my PC hooked up to a monitor for desk use, and also connected to a TV for watching movies and playing controller games. In duplicate mode, whether I'm watching a YouTube video or playing a game, I often get terrible tearing on the TV, and sometimes my computer crashes.

Some things to note about my setup:

-My monitor is a 24" ViewSonic vx2450wm-LED at 60Hz, and my TV is a 47" Vizio E470VL at 120Hz.
-The monitor uses DVI and the TV uses HDMI.
-The HDMI cable running to the TV passes through a Sony 7.1 receiver.
-My GPU is an XFX HD 7950.

Does anyone know what could possibly be causing the tearing and crashing? Any help is appreciated.

I checked under Screen Resolution in control panel, and both screens were at 60Hz at 1920x1080.

Hello... 1) That is your OUTPUT Driver Video card setting.... Now push some buttons on your TV to verify the HDMI INPUT is set to 60HZ 1080P.
2) Try Vsync setting from your Nvidia APP settings, AS suggested above.
3) Connect your Video card directly to your TV ( by-pass your reciever ) and TEST to see if problem stops.
4) Try a different HDMI input on your TV... and TEST to see if problem stops.
