Tech Help - Centipede

I have a centipede upright that was working fine until I had it for a
few days 🙁

It got turned on and off really fast and then stopped working. At first
it was making high pitched sounds and garbage was displaying on the
screen, changing rapidly. The very first time it did this the high
score screen was briefly visable (but garbled). I was getting allot of
beeping noise.

I looked around and did the AR/II 5v sense fix found here
(http://www.stickycarpet.com/pinx/pp2page2.html) and that did change
things. Still getting garbage on the screen but it is less frantic and
more predictable. Still noise but more constant noise.

* Not responsive to the test switch
* All fuses seem OK.
* I checked the voltages on the test points on the ARII board (after the
fix not before). The 5 and 12 volt readings are ok, but the 22 volt
readings are both in the 24 range. Not sure if this is enough to cause
a problem or not.

What else should I test?

Thanks for any help,

Shawn

Go into self test and see what comes up. Maybe your processor failed,
maybe your ram is bad, there's lots of things that could be wrong.
Hopefully the self test helps.

It is totally non-responsive to the self test switch.

I did see that, although none of those describe what is occuring. If
it really is something that got fried on the PCB, I'll probably send it
for repair or hunt down another one. I just wasn't sure if it might be
something easy related to the AR/II somehow.

Try reseating all of the socketed chips on the motherboard.

Matt,

What a simplistic suggestion.

Worked!

Even though I messed up one of the pins on the roms I didn't mess it up
enough.

Thanks for the help! And thanks to everyone who replied. I am in a
much better mood now.

Glad to hear that! The exact same thing happened to me last week. Sounds
like it's time to replace those old sockets with some new machine-pin types,
so you won't have any nasty surprises again. (Perhaps put sockets beneath
the 2114 RAMs while you're at it.)
