Technical Problem with D-II on New Laptop Comp - Screen fl..

I have played D-II since the day it came out. First on an old Windows 98
desktop and currently on a two year old Windows XP, SP1 desktop. No problems
ever. I ran both on the 3d graphics setting.

For xmas, I got my wife a new comp. It is a Dell Inspiron 8600, running Win
XP, SP2. It has a 1.6 GHz Pentium M CPU, 512 MB Ram, and an NVIDIA GeForce
FX Go5200 graphics card with 32 mB video ram. The screen is the attached
laptop screen and is a 15.4" WSXGA+ running in 1680 x 1050 pixels with
"highest (32bit) color. I am running DirectX 9.0.

I installed D-II on this laptop and had display problems. The installation
went normally. The video test that runs as part of the installation told me
that I could use the 3d graphics so I selected this option and started the
game. Note that at this point, I had finished installing LOD and was running
D-II, LOD in 800 x 600 mode. I logged into b.net, the game was auto-patched
up to the current and I tried to play. The initial screens were fine. I
created a char, entered chat, and selected a game to join.

However, upon entering that game, my graphics went "whacko" (to use the
technical term). There were flashing black bars across the screens that
looked worse whenever my character moved. The character, inventory, message,
and party screens were nearly illegible.

I tried updating the Nvidia graphics card drivers but the one that came with
the comp is more recent than the latest version available off the Nvidia
site.

I changed the Windows resolution to 1280 x 1024. This made everything look
weird since the laptop screen is wider than a normal screen (laptop is like
a movie screen or letterbox dimension whereas a normal computer screen is
like the dimensions of a TV). So anyway, everything was stretched too wide
in 1280 x 1024 mode. So I changed to 1280 x 800. This looked okay on the
Windows screen. However, the flicker and lines in D-II remained. Lastly, I
set the Windows resolution to 800 x 600. This made the icons and other
Windows applications (Excel, word, etc) look WAYYYY too big and also
stretched to the side. Anyway, even setting the Windows resolution to 800 x
600 prior to launching D-II did NOT cure the flickering and black line
problem.

I redid the installation but selected the 2D graphics setting and the game
ran fine. However, this laptop should have more than enough computing and
graphics power to play D-II in 3D mode so the problem must lie with some
sort of graphics, screen resolution, or arcane Windows or video card
setting.

Can anyone help me solve this? I would prefer to play in 3d mode. Thanks.

G'day,

Jim

I for sure can't help you but I've had many Dell's and if you post the
question in Dell's forum I bet someone there can answer your question.
Maybe you've already tried this, if so sorry.

Nothing to solve: D2 is a 2D game. Play it in 2D mode.

It just dawned on me: I hope, you don't run the screen refresh on any
other rate than 60 Hz? The LCDs need that "speed", in contrast to the
ray cathode tubes, they won't deliver better pictures at a higher rate.

Ah, Information. A property, too valuable these days, to give it away,
just so, at no cost.

I didn't think you could change it even if you tried.

If you need to email, then chainbreaker (naturally) at comcast dot
net--that's "net" not "com"--should do it.

It can be done. If the check box for "show only applicable speeds" is
unchecked, the other choices may be available. A 20" LCD at 85 Hz will make
your eyes explode.

Also set the screen for 800x600 and check the speed setting there too. Your
1280 desktop may be correct, but D2 changes the resolution when it starts.
