i was getting sudden chrome openings also (still do but less frequently) after researching i found out that i had a virus that targeted my malwarebytes AV.it was so bad if i even went near to try to uninstall MWB or try 3rd party uninstallers it would crash chrome and open with some car company in toronto. i found a uninstaller that worked finally like 4 pages into google search.

long story short i have a chrome extension that stops SOME popups and bitdefender now.
if you need specifics just ask.
