FC can help with getting around quickly, but I noticed in comparison
that Hannes manages to finish his Meph runs much faster than me, so I
guess it has also something to do with him using the minimap and me
using the big one, him thus being able to see faster where the border

It depends on what character you play.

The map components are always the same, and if you do it long enough
you learn to recognize the bits where the stairway down can be. Try
starting from the waypoint always having a wall on your left hand side
though, going round the map clockwise that way.
