my system:
xp 2000+
soyo kt333 dragon lite
512 ddr333
gf4ti 4200 64mb

I'm upgrading for hl2, and I have roughly $450.00 to spend on upgrades. I was planning on getting a 9800np, but I'm having trouble finding one in stores for a decent price(its ~270 at pc club and I dont wanna pay more than that).

So I figured I would give you guys a chance to make recomendations on what to do, I cant buy anything for a few days anyway and this would be a good way to kill time.

btw, I'm not buying online(long story) so dont recomend it and please dont tell me to rush out and spend 1000 bucks on a new system, I have 450 and THATS IT.

Or he could get a Radeon 9700 nonpro for about $220 or so and get a Barton 2500+ and overclock it. Are you interested in overclocking the components you are upgrading by the way?

I agree with Coolsquirtle except maybe the ram I think you would benifit from the ram but it would definatly be last on my shpping list with your budget..

The 512 megs should hold up pretty solid for the time being as drako was suggesting. More RAM in the future wouldn't hurt.

I dont think I will get a new mobo+processor(my mobo wont take a much faster chip). I dont see the point in paying all that money to get a extra 30% gain in mhz when most games are gpu dependant anyway.

I know I want a dx9 card, and I want to play as smooth as possible. But I am also cheap and indecisive. therein lies my problem.

Ok then if directx9 is a concern put the majority of your money into a radeon 9600pro or better. at this point the bottle neck in your system is for the most part your CPU. If your system wont support a better CPU you are out of luck but if it does sell your xp2000 on ebay for 20 bucks and put somthing better in your system because that CPU will be your bottle neck.;.

heyi would suggest something higher than a 9600pro for the simple reason that you want a significant increase from your previous card ti 4200. the 9600 wont give u that significant increase but i may be wrong. but if you cant change ur processor because you want the same mobo just buy like 256megs of ram and youll be golden.i cant see u blasting away 700+megs of ram on a gaming rig.

You could wait a few weeks.
From all reports the Next iteration of the 9700/9800 family is due to be released, the 9800XT.

Its arrival should push the prices down of the others.

Your ram is otherwise good, CPU is ok and should hold you over, though a barton might be a nice upgrade if you can afford one.

I make enough money to upgrade after a week or 2 of hl2 if its not running godly, but I'm not getting another athlon. this one is running at 70c and I'm sick of it.

I think I will be able to afford a p4 2.6+mobo with a 800mhz fsb plus the nessisarry ddr400 to get it to run right. BUT that would give me 6 computers... and thats just freaking exessive.
