Question Temp spikes on my i7-8700K during video conversion ?

On to the issue:

Got temp spikes up to 100C on my i7-8700K, only when doing video conversions. I have some gaming captures I want to convert to smaller files and I've tried both av1 and h265, on both Shotcut and VLC. Both spike my CPU up to 100C. Once I quit the job, or it finishes, the temp goes back down to 34C.
My games only go up to the high 60s to high 70s, not often entering the low 80 on some of my more demanding games.

Why does video compression temp spike so hard?
 
Some additional info on your hardware would help us help you. What cpu cooler? GPU? Video master file format and compression? PC case and fan layout?

Shortcut, VLC and handbrake have a GPU encode/decode option that will alleviate the workload. What encoder have you selected? A CPU-based encoder will basically pin it to max workload and temp. It’s amongst the most stressful task a CPU can do. Games are no comparison at all.

Thanks for the quick response.

As of now I just see an option to "use hardware encoder" in shotcut. I'll look into what is selected. I imagine it must be the CPU encoder if it's driving my CPU nuts. Thankfully I have not had to do this too many times. Glad I know now about the stress before I do it some more.

I've got hevc_nvenc under "configure hardware encoder". I'm trying to convert from h264 mp4 to av1 webm.

As of now after reading some on Shotcut, I can't seem to find the CPU options you mentioned, but I have job priority set to "low".
 
Just had a look at your PC parts list.

That Cryorig cooler looks inadequate for your CPU. 3-heatpipe towers with a 90mm fan are usually for 65W processors. You're pushing your luck beyond 95W, which a 8700K would easily blow past. You will need at least a 4-5 heatpipe tower, preferably more if CPU video encoding, with at least a 120mm fan. Something equivalent to a Noctua NH-U12S or better. (Everyone is raving about Thermalright Assassin 120s right now because they are so cheap.)

In Shotcut under "export", tick "hardware encoder" then click on "configure". Select 'h264_nvenc', 'h264_qsv', 'hevc_nvenc', and 'hevc_qsv'.
Then click 'Advanced', and 'codec' tab. Select your hardware encoder in the Codec drop-down menu.

'nvenc' is the encoder in your GTX1070, and qsv is the encoder in your 8700K's integrated GPU.

Next time you do an export, open Windows Task Manager and watch the GPU graph in the performance monitor. The GPU activity should skyrocket, with CPU activity matching in parallel. If CPU activity hits 100% but GPU isn't doing anything, then the GPU encoder hasn't been selected in your export setup.

PC part picker doesn't have any conflict with the Thermalright Assassin 120, but a second opinion would be nice. Will that keep it from going above 75C?
 
Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120SE - I haven't used one myself but I don't see any problems with your setup. Might be a close fit with the Ripjaws ram, but most likely fine. Your case can fit up to 160mm cooler height, so no problem there either. And yes it should keep things cool, it's basically double+ the materials of your Cryorig.

I got one, but I think PC partpicker wasn't able to identify a compatibility issue. The metal brace that is on the cooler unit itself is too wide for the square mounting area, and over shoots one of the brace screws by a lot. There's no way for me to screw down both sides. Is there a place I can get a shorter screw brace for the unit? It looks like it is removable, as there is a screw on top of it that looks like you can take it off. I tried ebay but there weren't any results. I contacted the seller and asked them too.
 
Well, kind of weird. I had to use the old cryorig back bracket, with the old screws, but the new metal male mounting brackets, which I had to use a small file to widen the holes so the old screws could go through. They lined up perfectly. Got them screwed in and the rig is sitting nicely and flush with the ripjaws. Everything is set up, but now I have to re-connect everything. I don't know where all everything went, though I have pictures. YouTube is not so helpful. This rig is 5 years old, so it's been a long time.
