i have an Intel i7 4790K with the cooler master hyper 212X with Cooler Master X1 heatsink paste.

My Idle temperature is around 45-50 degrees and while gaming it goes as high as 70-75 degrees.
Is this normal? Or Should i go for another cooling option. Also I am using a CM 690 II case, Should i change the case too?

Here's a screenshot of the temperature while gaming. I used MSI Afterburner with Rivatuner for taking the On-Screen Display.

you will want to put all fans intake and add more intake fans if possible to bring in fresh cooler air. leave the back as an exhaust. positive pressure setup. clean up those cables so air moves around freely. lastly a new cpu...
I just came to the forum to post about my similar problem. I have a Noctua NH-U14S cooler I want to throw a light overclock on the chip but if I can't keep thermals good without one it's a bit of a nonstarter. I run OCCT without an overclock and the temp gets up to low-mid 80C's within a few minutes and I stop the test.

On the same cooler and case I had an i5-3570k overclocked to 4.2 without hitting these temps, mid70's on that chip.

I don't understand what's going on here, any suggestions? I'm going to reseat it later today to ensure I didn't put too much thermal compound and that it's properly seated and will try again.

YES THE ROOM TEMPERATURE IT IS WARM. AND THE CASE I GUESS IS A LITTLE PROBLEM. THERE IS VERY LESS ROOM FOR AIR CIRCULATION. THERE IS VERY LESS SPACE FOR CABLE MANAGEMENT. SHOULD I UPGRADE THE CASE FANS. THEY ARE THE BASIC FANS I GOT FROM THE CASE WHEN I PURCHASED IT.

Here's the picture of my case setup.

Ok I would seriously consider getting a case where you can get better cable management behind the mobo tray, that rat's nest of cables can effect the airflow greatly which then messes up the thermals.

Ensure the fan profiles are maxing out when the temps get high as well. If they're only spinning at 60% because they're set to "silent" or "quiet" mode that could be the problem.

Run the rig with the case open like you have in the photo, does it still run hot when the case is open like that? If so might want to reseat the cooler to make sure the thermal paste and cooler are making full contact to the chip and is properly snug.

HOW MUCH SHOULD I APPLY THE PASTE? DOES EXCESS OF APPLYING THE COMPOUND CAN CAUSE HEATING PROBLEM?

I am playing GTA 5 and the CPU usage goes around by just 35-40%. Still the temp goes to 75 degree +.

Yes too much thermal compound can cause the heat not to properly transfer to the heatsink, and the paste would actually act as a blanket keeping the heat on the chip rather than moving out and away into the sink.

There are a lot of youtube videos that explain different methods of applying thermal paste I suggest looking at a few and deciding for yourself which is best.

where all the rest of your fans on the case. i see the back exhaust but are there any more..i am trying to figure out if you are a positive or negative set up.. what case is it??? it doesn't look like a CM 690 II case.

Great point and now that I look at that case it does have room behind the mobo to run the cables... why are they being run like a ratsnest where it blocks airflow? This thread just got weird and not in a good way.
