Hi, just a general question. What is the safe operating temperature range of an Athlon 1.7 cpu that is not overclocked. The AMD site says up to 90oC. Mine is running at about 50oc. Is that normal?

Yes, It's fine. A general rule is that no stability problems=no heat problem.

Do you mean an Athlon XP1700+, or an XP2100+? Just curious.

Just to add...i like to keep my cpu's under 55c...and yes unless you are uber overvolting (which will bite you in the ass a month from now) then stable = kosher.

Thanks for the info. The system is an Athlon XP1700+ which is running fine. One thing though. It occasionally locks up(not more than once a day). No error messages or heavy processor operations in progress. Could it be my nvidia riva tn264 video card or Seagate ata 80gb drive getting too hot? I have case with an exhaust fan on it and I changhed the cpu cooler this month. The video card has a small built-on heat sink but no fan. The hd runs warm all the time and I have had both for about a year.
Any more suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks again in advance.

Thanks. What are the prime numbers for??
I have an extra memory stick of 64mb. Can I add it to my machine with the 256mb memory stick I already have or will it cause errors/damage?

run the torture test...if you get errors then you have problems...probably the memory wont harm anything...did you get errors under memtest86?

You know mine amd1800+ and runs at 55c to 60c winter time. Summer time it drops to 50 to 55c due to the AC in the room. It ran fine for 3 Years other then the bloody video card. Which the fan died. And I replaced 2 weeks ago.

I ran the memtest for 4 hours and it didn't give any errors. I guess that means everything is ok. Thanks for the help with my doubts.

my 1800+ runs ar 35C idle and 39C under load, using arctic silver 5 and a coolermaster fan and heatsink, no lockups or bsd's on my win98se....and its overclocked to a 2100+ to boot....yours seems a tad high to me, but still well in the safe range, you might get it cooler if you use a better hs and fan....
