I've downloaded the windows server 2016 trial version ISO on a windows 7 computer and want to run it on a spare hard drive to test some server software before we build the server.

Do I just set it up on the hard drive then boot from it and after the testing will I be able to just remove the hard drive and run the computer 100% like it was before? Just want to make sure none of the steps i take have potential to mess anything up.

Take out or disconnect all other drives.
Connect the drive you wish to use.
Install the server OS.
Test it.

When you're done, just take that drive out and reconnect the original ones.

You could also install that server OS in a virtual machine and test your software.
