I just bought a Tenda FH330 wireless router. I have a TP Link TD-8816 modem. While setting up the router on 198.168.0.1, I enter 'admin' as password, and then 12345678 as the security key(choosing DHCP connection).
However the final page displays Connection status: Disconnected and the message 'Please check hardware connection of the WAN port'. I have tried 3 separate ethernet cables, but no luck. The 'SYS' indicator light of the router does not light up at all.

Is this an error on my part or is do I have a defective router?

Where did you try the "3 separate ethernet cables"?

Between PC and router, router WAN port and modem, or some other connection combination?

Have you tried any ping tests?

Do you have the user manual/guide for the Tenda FH330? What does it say about the 'SYS' light being unlit?
