can anyone give me a definite answer about if there is a performance difference if i connect at the middle of the cable as opposed to the end?

I wouldn't think so. Isn't that for the slave device?

Terminated (SCSI?)
If you're using SCSI drives, it wouldn't make any difference. Make sure to use the right termination adapter (active terminator is recommended) and plug it in at the end of cable.

 Good or Bad have no meaning at all, depends on what your point of view is.

with IDE, in theory there's a higher possibility of bit errors as reflections come back from the other end of the cable....which can cause less reliability and/or performance issues. But.....I don't know of anyone that has ever been able to measure any really significant difference between the two so I wouldn't worry about it

You're supposed to have the end of the cable hooked up because of reflections or something, I've seen people chop it off to avoid such issues. Once that's been addressed, the rule of thumb is that the shorter the cable, the less likely for data to be corrupted, better performance included in the results.

Ive seen no differences with hard drives connected to either the first or second position, thoubh i prefer using the end as it is speculated it reduces the chances of data corruption due to signal reflections, though ive never seen it.
