Terrible game performance with Gtx 980

I have just built my first gaming PC and decided to get Team Fortress 2 as a first game i started a solo training session and the fps was so bad it was unplayable the textures looked terrible and the game rand horridly. I cannot seem to find the answer to this and since i have a fairly decent PC i would think i would be able to play such a simple game. Thank you for you help in advance.

Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
MSI Z97 PC MATE ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB)
Asus Geforce gtx 980 Matrix
Corsair CX 600W

I know its not the hardware as it is more than capable of playing this game so it has to be software. Does this happen in any other game?

Have you checked the installed GPU/Video driver? You may find it's using the Intel one.. I had this problem the first time I upgraded my GPU. Also try reinstalling GEForce Experience. Your GPU should blitz that game without breaking a sweat.

Maybe a simple question, though some people make this mistake. Have you connected your PC to your monitor via your Graphics card and not the motherboard?

No I have not had the time to download more games as I have just finished the build
