Test bench surface

I was wondering can you set a mb on a mouse mat and plug it in and test it like that or will it short out

As long as the surface you place the mobo on isn't conductive, it won't short out. I can't imagine a mouse pad being conductive, so it should be fine.

Turn the mouse pad over and set the motherboard on the rubber side just in case.
You never know what kind of super tech mega glide cloth or plastic the mousing surface is made of.
