Question Testing a GPU without motherboard

Is it possible that I could safely test a GPU just to see if it turns on by using a PSU tester in the PSU's 24 pin, and connecting the PCIE cable to the graphics card? I just need to know if the GPU even turns on, so I don't waste my time trying to get it to work when my new mobo comes.

I would not really recommend doing so. Installing a card takes moments, don't overthink it.
