Testing GPU on higher res than monitor

So I am about to upgrade from a 1080p+768p display to a 1440p+1080p display.
I want to know how much performance I can expect on games. On my 768p monitor I was weirdly enough allowed to use a 1080p resolution on games but it be displayed in 768p.
Is there a way I can test the performance I'll get from 1440p whilst only having a 1080p?
All I want is the benchmarks, I do not care for an image. I need a rough estimate.

Solution

Yes,open nvidia settings.

enable dsr resolutions

Whats shown there multiplier wise depends on your native screen resolution.

If your screen is 1080p it would be the 1.78x...
Roughly you have to produce two times the pixel, so you get half the frames per second. But you will also use higher resolution textures, so you need more video memory....
Tell me what gpu you have and I link you a benchmark 😉

I currently have a GTX 1070. I am quite easily achieving 60fps in AAA titles.
Is there any way to physically run 1440p on it even though I only have a 1080p monitor?

If its 720p then you'd use 4x.

Once thats done (you can actually tick every option if you like) then those virtual resolutions should become available to use both in windows desktop & in games graphics settings menu.

That is precisely what I was looking for, thank you very much.
