Testing motherboard without case

So my plan is to have the motherboard sitting on top of the static bag, with a stick of RAM and a Celeron in it to make sure it works before I pack it away for a while.

So is it safe to just have it sitting on my desk (it IS on carpet, but I can wear rubber-soled shoes if that helps), just for a short period of time?

I also plan to update the BIOS, cause it's going to eventually get a Haswell Refresh CPU and it's a Z87, not Z97 motherboard.

So yah, is this a safe thing to do?

Solution
Ok. DO NOT SET IT ON THE MOTHERBOARD STATIC BAG!!!!! The outside is conductive, the inside is not. Just set it on the cardboard box. And every time before you touch anything, touch something metal that's grounded (metal sink, Metal table, stove, someone else computer case).

You can get one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16899261005
Connect it to something grounded, but doing the touching method works just fine.

Static is only a worry in drier areas. If you have a humidifier or vaporizer that can make the humidity higher thats also a good thing to do.

Again, touch method is fine.

Okay.

It occurred to me briefly the other day that the outside might be conductive, glad I decided to ask. 😛

Anyway, really the only thing I need to concern myself with is static, so if I avoid touching the motherboard while things are plugged in as much as possible and make sure I'm grounded, I should be fine, right?

It doesn't matter if it's on or off, plugged in or not, always make sure you are grounded. If you live in a humid area, you'd be fine if you rubbed your head on a balloon and touched it 😛 (dont). Really, if you touch something grounded every couple mins, you'll be fine. I can remember countless time I've forgotten to do so, and everything was fine. If you mess it up just RMA it :)

alright, thanks! 😀
