I need a text editor that will show me exactly what tabs, carriage returns, and linefeeds appear in the raw text file, without the editor normalizing them in any way according to Windows, Unix, or Mac standards. I want to see what is actually there.

I'd like to see the characters in a readable form, not hex, if possible. Does such an editor exist?

Notepad++
Sublime Text 3
SynWrite
Wordpad

Any decent text or programming editor will work

It seems that Notepad++, in its screen display when Show Symbols is enabled, is normalizing what it finds in the file based on the "Format (Line ending)" setting in Preferences-> New Document, where you have to choose from Windows (CRLF), Unix (LF), or Macintosh (CR).
