Most webcams can be set up to do what you want, however, they work very
poorly or not at all in dark conditions. If you need to monitor and
record overnight then a traditional cctv with infra red capabilities is
the way to go, which may also entail mounting it all outside the window,
not inside, to avoid reflections.
Webcams work well during daylight hours, unless pointed directly into
the sun/light sky but use of an old pair of sunglasses can help with
that to some extent.
There is software online that you can use if the supplied stuff isn't up
to it, but it's not easy to find good free stuff.
You didn't mention if you want to record incidents manually, try and do
it automatically, or monitor remotely, etc etc. All things that need to
be thought about.
