when you fire up a new or rebuilt rig is????

1. The Artic Silver on the HSF?

2. Various solder points in the Mobo.

3. Gremlins getting fried?

Anyone know for sure? Everything works fine BUT that smell persists in the rebuild I did for my sone. New Mobo, HSF and thermal paste.

My Fortron reeked when it was new...don't know exactly how to name the smell, but it was pretty bad. Anyway, a few days of use (in another part of the house  ) fixed it.

Nope, I put the new PSU in my new rig. He got the Aspire 520 which was already well burnt in.

No Pri, no lizards or other varmints. Just a curious kind of smell. Odd.

so uh... if you're still around, did you ever find out what was causing the smell? I'm being told by everyone that there's a strange "electronics" smell in my room, as they termed it. I can't smell it so I really don't know what's going on. It can't be too healthy, can it? lol

Lots of things can burn off. The PCB has a coating on it that can burn off when it gets hot.

For the other guy, Fortron Source power supplies particularly seem to have a little more oil on the internal sheet metal surfaces than most.

I think it was perhaps the thermal paste getting up to burn. I don't smell "it" any more so I assume my son's rig is fine.

you don't smell it anymore because you're used to it or because it's really gone? lol ;)

Sometimes new componets will burn off loose materails most commly the PCB. I will notice an odd smell in my new rigs for a couple weeks. PCBs will have this kind or presative layer on that will burn off when used. A new application of thermal past will produce a smell too for a little bit. Give it a couple weeks. Hell it could something in there that uses a material that is just flat out very armomous and your case fans are irrigating it out.

Youll become accustomed to the smell and will forget about eventually. As long as your rig is working fine then your fine.

you guys should take on smoking, that would be the end on those sensitive nostrals ;)

but, i must admit that even though i poured half an ashtray into my rig, the smell of short-fused powersupply is un-slay-able

Unh, I've been working in utility regulation for 23 years. Specifically with high voltage electric transmission lines. We've been working to get PCB's (PolyChlorinatedBiphenols) OUT of everything for decades due to that pesky cancer causing problem it has... You're now are telling me that I've PCB's sitting in a puter 2-3 feet from my FACE???!!! And that they're burning off and polluting my breathing space???!!!! Somebodies gonna have to prove that one to me...
