The AMD 64 3500+ on S939

Ok I am considering buying an AMD 64 3500+ on S939 or better once PCI express motherboards come out. At any rate I was wondering. It says that this chip is equivlent to a 3.5ghz machine however it only has a core speed of 2.2ghz. So is it equivlent to 3.5ghz because it has 64bits instead of 32 bits. For instance if I needed to run a program which required 3.5ghz to run but was only 32-bit compatible would this chip be able to run it? So does this chip run 32-bit applications at its 2.2ghz core speed?

3500+(2.2Ghz) is +-10% within Intel's 3.5Ghz, well there's no such thing yet, but that's in 32bit, once the 64bit apps comes out, the 3500+'s gonna fly.

For sure! I understand that you are new to CPU technology. AMD Athlon 64 are fully 32bit processor WITH a 64bit extension. This mean no emulation or slowdown at all when running 32bit stuff on these CPU.

Actually, all reviews site compare 32bit performance of the Athlon 64 CPU. Because Windows XP 64bit is still in a BETA stage and there is not much apps./drivers that are mature enough in 64bit.

Buying an AMD Athlon 64, is basically buying a 32bit processor with a 64bit ready CORE for future use. This mean when WinXP 64bit will hit the shelves you will not have to change your CPU to install the new OS.

I strongly recommends you to wait for a PCI-EXPRESS anabled motherboard to come out. This will ensure that your base system will be future-proof.

But, if you buy new with AGP only, you will be satisfied too, but you might be able to plug a future generation GPU into your system.

Reason being for the Athlon64's outstanding performance is its integrated memory controller. If the XP had this it would perform equally with the 64. The 64 Bit part is completely useless until Windows 64 Bit comes out. But the 64 still rocks.
