Well, it seems that at the same time that the clawhammer and sledgehammer make their debut, the replacement core for the thouroghbred is to appear as well. It seems that the new AMD roadmap shows a processer core code named Barton. The only thing that seems to set it apart is that it will be using the new SOI technology, which I know little about. People feel free to add your ideas and comments. BTW, the Barton has both a Desktop and Mobile version apparently. Here's the link to the new AMD roadmap: <A HREF="http:// http://www.amd.com/news/virtualpress/roadmap.html " target="_new">http:// http://www.amd.com/news/virtualpress/roadmap.html </A>

If anyone knows anything about the SOI technology, i'd love to hear about it.

Without Evil, there can be no Good. Therefore, without an Intel, there can be no AMD.

Gee.. why dont we see if AMD can even get Palomino and Thoroughbred out to market before we go making silly statements like that. AMD has delayed Palomino at least once already. I wonder if AMD even knows what there doing next week let alone 1.5 yrs from now.

I don't think it has been delayed nearly as long as the p3 1.13 now has it? There are several reasons for delays. Sometimes you find out that your product is royally messed up ( hint intel 1.13 ), other times you can't just seem to produce any in quantity ( hint intel p3 1 gig) other times, you find out that what you currently have out on the market is selling so well against the competition that you don't have to release it when you had planned. If your AMD, and your current line of processors is taking away market share from your competiton and doing very well, why hurry the release of a new line that will only cut into the sales of the line you are currently marketing? For instance. if you are a car dealer and you are currently selling 2001 models, why release 2002 models in June? You also fail to realize that the AMD athlon chips are actually scaling much higher than even AMD had antcipated ( talking about the t-bird/ duron core). This gave them an option to continue with the t-bird without having to rush out the palimino's. This is more about making money than not being able to produce the palomino.

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing!<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by Ncogneto on 04/30/01 02:10 AM.</EM></FONT></P>

I realize that roadmaps are tenative at best, but the fact remains, that for now, there is a replacement core for the Thouroughbred, and for some reason, AMD has placed it's arrival with the Hammer line. Now, delays may happen, but the roadmap mentions that it will use the SOI technology, which from the little I know, is a superior technology to current methods, and AMD needs to get it out in some form in order to use it. The Barton is the product that will use it. I don't think it will dissapear as the Mustang did.

But, I do want to know more about the SOI tech., so please post any links or info you have. Thanks.

SOI tech is a tech developed by IBM and AMD has purchased the rights to use it, IBM is also reportedly going to start using AMD chips in there entry level servers.

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing!
