I'm currently looking for a means to back up somewhat large amounts of data to a reliable medium. I've thought of going with CDR, looked at those DVD-RAM drives and I've also been checking out magnetto optical storage. Essentially I just want to be able to safely archive about 20 gigs at a time (if I need multiple discs or whatever it's not a big deal) and I won't be archiving data on a regular basis, probably once every couple of months if that. Speed isn't really an issue, I am looking more for solid reliability, cost effectiveness and that sort of thing. Do any of you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

i think old fashioned tape backup is the most cost effective solution.
there are up to 40 or 80Gb tape units out there

How much is wise to spend on a tape drive and media? 40 gig would be plenty for me. Do you have any suggestions regarding what tape drives I should look at?

*shrugs* how long is a length of string?
how much u spend all depends on how much data u have, both now & in the future... and how much u value it.

as a start toms hardware did a 40gig tape drive review a few months back. go to the article archive and read it for a starter...

also, you may wish to visit anoher of my haunting grounds,

they are dedicated to storage, and have forums too, more specialised than toms.

can't go wrong with a seagate b/u drive. 20 gb native means you cna back up to 40 and for only around 250 bucks.

thing is, for less than the price of a tape drive, you can buy a hard drive and a removable drive bay.
