The best P4 heat sink?

What do you think is the best heat sink for a p4 2.4 system? I am thinking about the Swiftech MCX4000 and the ThermalTake Spark 7. I hear the Swiftech is better but you have to remove your mobo and the heat sink retention system. So I am leaning toward the Spark 7. Let me know what you think. Also let me know if you think there is something better. Thanks.

I got a Alpha 8942 it works good for me but I here the Swittech MCX4000 is better and the slk900 is the best I think at the moment. Also the P4 stock coolers are good for stock clock speeds. See how the stock cooler does if your not satisfied get a better cooler, if you gonna overclock again get a better cooler.

Thanks for the reply. I am just worried that I am hurting my processor. I have never overclocked it, and yet it sits idle at 38C - 40C and at full load is 52C. But that is just in windows, the BIOS reads the temps at least 10F higher than windows. So the stock heat sink just doesnt seem to be doing it. What type of installation does the slk900 require? Thanks.

I have an SLK900 on my 3 GHz P4; however, I have yet to get any great temperatures. With my stock Intel heatsink, my computer idled at 43 C and would never get above 50 C under load. With my SLK900, my computer still idles at 43 C, but can get up to 65 C under load. I am using a 92mm Zalman fan at full speed, and my heatsink is not hot to the touch. I have some AS3 coming this week, but I think something else is wrong. I don't think my core should get above 50-55 C at any time.

No doubt that the SLK-900U with a decent 92mm fan will outperform any air cooling swiftech has to offer.

is there good pressure on the chip, and is it being applied evenly? if i'm reading it right, you're saying the stock intel heatsink BEAT the SLK900, and that is just not right

LtBlue,

Everything seems pretty secure; however, I am getting some AS3 this week, so I will completely remove and remount the heatsink.

But then again... Thermalright didn't provide the greatest directions for mounting the SLK900, so I could have missed something. I am pretty sure everything is correct, but I didn't use any of the included strips of padding.

Well I have the Coolermaster Aero 7 and it owns for me. I get temps in the 20's all the time. (I live in a fairly cool area) It's easy to install too. Just don't get any ThermalSh** products cause they are just fun to look at. They don't actually work well.

But, that said, the SLK-900U is the best hands down. Pop a high cfm fan on there and there is tons of ocd'ing headroom.

so if I have a p4 2.4c and an Abit IS7 and want to overclock that baby, you are saying that the SLK-900U is the ABSOLUTE BEST air cooler that I can get for the chip? What temps should this keep my chip at?

calculate your chip wattage with overclocking (there are multiple formulae out there for this, but i don't remember which one is correct), then use this to calculate temperature:
(cpu power output)(C/W rating)=degrees C above room/ambient temperature

an overclocked cpu that outputs 85W, used with a cooling combo rated at .22C/W (a fairly good rating), will give load temperatures (85)(.22)=18.7C above fan inlet air temp
at a room temp of 20C then, your overclocked processor at load will be at a mere 38.7C!
the SLK-800U was given a .15 C/W rating by overclockers.com(used with the delta screamer however. using a lower power fan will obviously raise the C/W)

obviously, your mileage may vary, but this will give you a rough idea of what to expect

You can go to overclockers.com and get all the latest info on heatsinks. They tested a hell of a lot but remember, some were with the Delta screamer fans, do you really want that much noise?

You can also go to Xbit labs and see what the effect of temperature is on the P4. To cut a long story short, you should keep your P4 below 70C.

Does anybody have problems fitting the SLK-900U on an Abit IS7 motherboard?

How hard is installation of this compared to the stock Intel heatsink and fan?

What fan would you recommend to put on this heatsink? Both for the lowest noise and the best airflow cooling?

My system:
P3 850mhz (100fsb), 512 Micron PC133, Abit SE6, IBM Deskstar 75gxp (60 gig @ 7200rpm), Hercules 3D Prophet 2 GTS (64 meg), SB Live MP3, Pioneer 16x DVD, Asus 45x CD-Rom

Here is the best heatsink on the market if it fits your MB.Zalman Copper CPU Fan For 478Pin & AMD64 CNPS7000-CU
Read the list on there web site it tell you what MB,s will and want work.

let me put it this way, i did own a Spark 7 for a few weeks, but now own the MCX4000 (which is one of the best things thats happened to my PC as it looks cool aswell cos i put this fan on it http://www.pccasegear.com.au/prod505.htm

the spark 7 is noisy and doesn't do nearly as well as the MCX4000 (well in my opinion anyway), though it is cheaper, alot cheaper than the MCX4000, so i suppose you could say that even's it out.

With the MCX4000 up just slap on a real quite fan and it cools just as well, if not more so than the spark 7 when it sounds like a hair dryer!

anyways . . .

Oh yeah, the MCX4000 is very easy to install if thats what you are worried about. :-D
