Kid is looking at a Dell Inspiron i7559-2512BLK, but I'm wondering if he isn't better off waiting until everyone is putting GeForce 10 series chips in their laptops, which offers a rather large shift in performance, as far as I understand.

Personally, I would not want 8GB of RAM, less than 4GB of VRAM, and nothing slower than 7200 RPM or smaller than 1GB of storage. But it's his computer, not mine.

GTX 1060 laptops are about $1,300 not 2,000. Prices won't drop for a while on those most likely, but only way to know for sure is to work in the marketing dept of the laptop vendors.

For $750 that Dell is a good buy even now, although it will struggle with newer games at higher settings.

There is also this model with a 970M for a bit over $800...
Right, there are laptops with 10 series chips, but they are few and far between, with stupid high prices.

We are not in the $2-3,000 dollar laptop market.

I'm wondering if they will become more common and cheaper after the holidays, as perhaps the holidays are creating a "bubble" of suck for suckers.

Dont know how soon they will become more common. Concerning the prices yes, i dont think its a good idea to buy things during holidays. I have noticed a slow daily price increase on pc parts for the past month in my local shops, i guess its either to take advantage of those who wish to shop for presents or to lower the prices and present them to you as " "Christmas Sales" " .

I'd get this Dell over the i7 one, cheaper, won't be any slower in games, larger SSD https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015PYYDMQ/ref=asc_df_B015PYZ0J64684204?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=shopzilla0d-20&ascsubtag=shopzilla_rev_378-20%3B14816580529640921776610080302008005&linkCode=df0&creative=395093&creativeASIN=B015PYZ0J6&th=1

It seems this is the absolute worst time to buy a laptop—not only because of the Christmas price gauging, but also because new graphics tech is being held back to clear inventories of old tech.

We're going to wait until laptops more commonly ship with GeForce 10 series chips.

There are actually some great prices on systems now, that laptop you liked was about $100 more less than a month ago. No tech is being held back, you can get GTX 1060/70/80 laptops now easily.
