The console

A little poll about the console

1. do you consider it a tool for tweaking and configuring your
game - or is it a downright cheat? And does it make a
difference whether it is used in connection with the
pre-game customisation before you start playing,
or later, in-game?

2. If you consider it a cheat - are there exceptions? Situations
where you won't hesitate to use it, and where you will even
find it a useful tool?

3. If you think it is a usefool tool, are there exceptions where
you find it IS a cheat?

4. How often - if at all - do you use it for getting info, resetting
the game, recovering items, or fixing accidentally broken
quests in order to avoid returning to an earlier savegame or
starting with a new character?

5. Do you - or have you - used the console as a 'treasure
chest'. Giving yourself a cure, restore attribute, a sorely
needed item or potion ?

6. Finally - Have you ever used it as a teleport, with
the 'coc', 'position' or 'positioncell' commands?

---------------

My own answers is

1. a tool basically. If it is used before I start. Used later, in-game
it is a cheat

3. A cheat if the motive is to give your an advantage, like avoid
being killed by going into god-mode, or a quest item because
you are too lazy do search properly

4. resetting using 'ra' or 'fixme' is often unavoidable. And
using 'placeatpc' is useful and acceptable. Npc's who are
on duty providing travel services, or other things sometimes
gets very lonely if you seldom use them. They wait for you at
the nearest bar. The cnsole then, is like a sign, saying:
'ring the bell, and I will be back'

5. Restoring attributes, yes, often - and temporarily removes
the vampire sun spell, when a travel service lands me at the
the location in broad daylight. I put it back when i get indoors

6. I like teleporters. If a mod don't have one, I make it.
My favorite mod is varcusio tower outside Balmora.
The corridors are lined with tapestries and braziers
And they are all teleporters, but I use the construction
set, and not the console

It's a tool for fixing what's broken.

Never had to fix quests or recover items. Mostly I used it to get my
character unstuck, or make NPCs appear where they were supposed to
appear. Just bug correction.

Occasionally, I'd fire up enableracemenu to choose a new hairstyle,
within an appropriate roleplaying context. E.g., when my Paladin
started the Temple shrine quests, he shaved his head.

Nope.

Nope.

I always make a decision before I start playing, cheat or no cheat.
That isn't to say I haven't cheated my system, of course 😛.

RA, Fixme and a "gone" quest item.

Every so often. I'm playing a thief right now, and after doing the TG
quest in the mages guild, I picked up "Withershins" too. I needed it
later, however, and had spoken to a guard. Rather than hunt down the
Buckmoth "evidence" chest, I just added it again.

I try not to...

When I _really_ want to get at quest done quickly.

Well, that's my opinion, whether you want it or not (probably the
latter).

It can be either, depending on what you use it for.

Essential tools like RA and TFH only work in-game.

As I said, RA and TFH are essential tools, definitely not cheats.

Using Player Setvalue is usually a cheat, but not always.

If I'm playing a thief, I always use TFH so I know when I'm stealing.
The fact that you can otherwise steal without knowing it is a flaw in
the game. Either everything lying around should be owned, or most things
outside on the ground should be fair game, not the awkward mix you
currently have.

No, but I would use it to reset my encumbrance if it got broken, as so
many people have reported.

No, but I have no problem with Teleport service mods.
