There are two ways to orient yourself in darkness.

I'm afraid that's a bit too oblique for me - could you please
give a more concrete hint? (The only darkness I've encountered
was in the cave part, and I solved that by bringing in a lit torch
- exploring the darkness itself seemed pointless).

You have no normal sense of direction in the dark. But there's a little
light; if you follow it, you get to the entrance. You can do the
opposite as well, but I don't remember the verb.
