the filename directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect

ok so I'm trying to turn off the read only attribute on my steam folder using command prompt as it won't stay off..

I'm typing attrib-r+sc:\programfiles(x86)\steam but keep getting the message above.. I have tried it without () still get same message can someone please just type what I need to type its doing my head in.

ok going to give up for now I'm trying to turn off the read only on my steam file as it won't turn off and steam have recommended to do this to stop video lag (ie cut scenes) it works when I do it, but it turns itself back on after and I have to keep turning it off to play games grr

Are you able to aceess it via the file explorer? Right click the file and select "properties". Uncheck the read-only box.

yes and it changes but doesn't stay changed. thats why I wanted to change it in cmd... but I cant seem to get the line right..

Did you try putting quotes around the path name like "c:\program files..."? If a folder has a space in it's name, the full path needs quoted.
