You could argue that the games that you played when you got your computer in
98 or 99 were simply graphically improved versions of the games that came
before then. Games are developing and improving all the time. Each new
popular console sees breakthroughs in gaming. The first playstation saw many
games that were way in advance of any games outside of a local arcade. The
Playstation took arcade gaming into the home. The Dreamcast saw Shenmue,
with more interactivity with your surroundings than in any similar game
previously. The 2nd Playstation has seen the Grand Theft Auto series go 3D,
combining all the action of a game like Driver, with running and shooting in
a 3d environment like in a game like Manhunter - definitely a first. PC
gaming continues to see better FPS games and strategy games - plus online
gaming which is still in its infancy on consoles. The latest step has been
the new Half Life 2 and Doom 3 game engines. Love or loathe those games, the
game engines will be used to power many games for years to come. The Quake 3
engine that came out about 5 years ago is still being used in recent games.
Graphics and game physics are getting closer and closer to real life.
Controllers and peripherals have improved too. I don't think we're in the
"Golden Age", and I don't think we've passed it either. Gaming is just
coninual improvement.Ultimately you're relying on hardware to improve gaming
capabilities. The gaming industry is bigger than ever. It used to be kids
only who had a games console. Again the Playstation was responsible for
another "first", by appealing to gamers in their 20s and above. The older
gamers either had a computer and played few games on it, or played in
arcades only prior to then. Gaming is better than ever, so is therefore,
closer to the "Golden Age" than ever before.
